Who?
As a group we want to represent the soldiers that were in the 4th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. We also want to juxtapose this by dressing as technicians.
What & Why?
There will be three sections within our performance, as well as a Pre-Performance and a Post-Performance. Before we require an audience, we require volunteers who will be asked to print a footprint and sign it, which will resemble volunteering for the army. All the footprints printed by the public and pre-printed by us will then contribute during the installation we will create during our performance.
For this installation we will have a thousand footprints, over two performances to resemble the amount of men typically in a battalion. A large area of the floor will then be covered as we lay out the footprints in a regimented fashion, much like a drill. After we have finished laying out the footprints, we will the go back on ourselves scrunching up every footprint, to resemble the men being injured, tortured and killed during war. We will then proceed to straighten out each footprint to represent the men returning from war, battered, injured and distraught.
At the end of our performances we will then become technicians again, sitting down to have a cup of tea after having worked hard to fit the auditorium out with equipment, or the footprints in this case.
Where?
We chose to hold our performance in the auditorium, as we wanted to juxtapose what the room is used for in present day and what it was used for during 1914. As the name suggests The Drill Hall, was used to train army volunteers during the first and second war. However, now it is used as a fully functioning theatre and as Drama students we found it interested that we were basically doing a performance in a typical performance area however we were representing its previous use.
